William Barsan, M.D.

Inducted June 11, 2000 
Dr. Barsan is a 1968 graduate of Revere
High School and attended college at the University of Cincinnati and medical
school at the Ohio State University, graduating with his M.D. in 1975.
He did graduate training in Emergency Medicine at the University of Virginia
and the University of Cincinnati from 1975-1979. He was on the medical
school faculty at the University of Cincinnati until 1992 when he was recruited
to the University of Michigan as Professor and Head of the Section of Emergency
Medicine. In 1999, he became the first Chair of the Department of Emergency
Medicine at the University of Michigan.
He served as the President of the Society
for Academic Emergency Medicine from 1991-1992 and was a recipient of the
Hal Jayne Award for Academic Excellence in Emergency Medicine in 1995.
He served as a director of the American Board of Emergency Medicine from
1993-2001 and was the President of the Board in 1998-1999.
He also serves on the Editorial Board
of the Annals of Emergency Medicine and is an editor of Rosen’s
Emergency Medicine textbook.
Dr. Barsan has been a leading researcher
in the emergency treatment of stroke and has authored over 80 publications
in various medical journals. He helped pioneer early treatment for patients
with stroke, particularly treatment with clot-busting agents. He has served
on the Executive Committee of the American Stroke Association, a division
of the American Heart Association.
Dr. Barsan makes his home in Ann Arbor,
Michigan where he lives with his wife, Mary (Smithers) Barsan, also a native
of Akron. He has three children: David (21), Blake (19) and Anna (16).
