Evelyn Bruner

Presenter:  Russell Vernon

It is my privilege, this afternoon, to be part of the awards ceremony honoring five distinguished educators.   Most all of us remember a teacher who changed our lives.

My parents moved to Bath in 1951.  It was at this time, 50 years ago, I met a very special lady, one who had a large influence on my life and schooling, lessons I carry with me to this day.  She was my high school English teacher, Mrs. Evelyn Bruner.

Mrs. Bruner taught for three years at other school districts in Ohio and eleven years at the old Bath High School before coming to Revere.  She served as an educator for a total of 26 years in the Revere system, retiring from teaching in 1970.

One of the classes with Mrs. Bruner was centered on a discussion about when to use the word, “Lady”.  My mother had told me that all women were considered ladies.  I was prepared to debate.  After much discussion in class among all of us, we learned an important lesson.  All women were not necessarily ladies.  My school friend at the desk next to me finished his term paper with the words “to error is human, to forgive divine.”  Lesson:  This was a college preparatory class and one doesn’t write attempted humor, unrelated to the subject into the assignment.

It gives me great pleasure, at this time, to present evelyn Bruner’s Distinguished Educator Award to her son Jere, who traveled here today from Oberlin to be with us.  Jere.
